Minutes for Math Issues Committee     Friday,  4/19/02
(at Gateway – North Haven Campus)

Attendance: Larisa Alikhanova (Three Rivers), Kathy Bavelas (Manchester), Alice Burstein (Middlesex), Elaine Dinto (Naugatuck), Miguel Garcia (Gateway)  Alice Grandgeorge (Manchester),  Joe Karnowski (Norwalk), Mark Leach (Housatonic), Bob Lynott (Naugatuck),

1.   The minutes from 2/08 were accepted.
Kathy will make changes to common course numbering project and then will email all campuses to make sure there are no more changes. She will then provide a master list that will indicate all changes.

2.   Common Core
Kathy & Alice suggested we use a credit bearing math course
Miguel was in agreement.  They pointed out that even the quantitative literacy course uses critical thinking and problem solving skills.  Alice said that this would  work for Middlesex because of what they offer.

Final Recommendation from the Math Issues Committee regarding the Common
Core: In place of the statement:

A math course numbered MAT*100 or higher
(this number uses the numbers under the not yet adopted  Common Course Numbering Project)

3.   Tech Prep

No new news about tech prep.  Kathy suggested possible meeting with tech prep people.   We will make this an item for the September meeting agenda .  We could possible have the meeting the same day as the MATYCONN fall meeting.
We hope to have Pat Hirschy help us with this.

4.   ADA and Mathematics Requirements
This topic was brought up by Alice Burstein concerning waivers from math
requirement on her campus (Middlesex).  At Middlesex,  the approval of mathematics  department is not needed, all that is required is a signature.
Alice asked if there should be a way for us to show non-support on this waiver?
How are waivers handled at other colleges?  No one really knew, so most of us
figured it must bypass us as well  We are to find out how this is dealt with on our campuses for the next meeting.

5.   CAMPY

Kathy provided information about CAMPY.  She requested each campus to give her the name of the vendor providing food and the cost so that we can provide a check the day of  CAMPY.  Kathy also wanted to know if we could film a morning or afternoon session (not needed for every location).  She will first make sure there is no problem
videotaping the kids.   CAMPY  website:     http://www.montvilleschools.org/campy/

6.   Next meeting
Scheduled for the Statewide Professional Day on Friday, September 20.
