Math Issues Meeting
Meeting
began promptly at 11:00. Present: (Asnuntuck)
Pat Hirschy, (Capital) Kathy Herron,
(Manchester) Diane Hillyer, (Middlesex) Linda Musco, (Naugatuck)
Elaine Dinto Note:
Several committee members were unable to attend (Miguel Garcia; Joe
Karnowski, Larisa Alikhanova, June Decker, and Mark Leach had Search
Committee Interviews); Joe sent notes for this meeting. Focus of
the discussion concerned Common Numbering Issues -- The group decided to continue to pursue the statistics transfer issue with UConn, and believes that resolution must come from the Statistics Department at UConn. Pat had a copy of the Minutes from Friday, September 14, 2001, from the UConn-CC Articulation Meeting at UConn; as stated in those minutes, syllabi for Statistics courses were to be exchanged, and a meeting was scheduled for the UConn West Hartford Campus for April 5, 2002; however that meeting never took place and there has been no communication with UConn regarding statistics courses since. Elaine
will compose a letter, and Pat will edit it, regarding the unresolved
transfer issues with statistics courses; they will contact Michael
Menard (Executive Program Director, Undergraduate Education &
Instruction) and Deborah Rice (Associate Director, Admissions);
representative syllabi, and the list of agreed upon topics, will be
included. A request will be made to seek resolution by January 15, 2004,
so that colleges will have time to sign off on Common Numbering before
the February 1 deadline. A copy of the letter will go to Miguel. Committee
members discussed the possible role of Math Issues when colleges wish to
make future content or credit changes in a course, or introduce a new
course, and a process colleges might follow. Suggestions include that a
college representative should check the MATYCONN website to see if there
is a similar course offered at another community college. Also that
representative should check individual college websites for syllabi, to
find similarities between the proposed one and an existing one; perhaps
by adjusting the proposed syllabus a bit, the new course would match an
existing course and share the same number. The proposed syllabus should
also be shared at a Math Issues Committee meeting, as perhaps another
college might be thinking about a similar course but does not yet have
the course approved. This should all take place before the new course
goes through Division and Educational Affairs Committee approval. The Math
Issues Committee does not wish to inject itself in local matters, but
sees itself strictly in an advisory capacity to facilitate
communication, so that a complete, accurate, and current listing of
community college math courses can be kept by the Central Office and
posted on the MATYCONN web site. The
December 5 meeting was cancelled; members decided to share information
regarding UConn articulation through e-mail instead. Future
agenda items include (1) /revising/completing the procedure for
incorporating new math courses and sharing this with all colleges and
the Central Office, (2) articulations. Meeting
adjourned at 12:30. |
