for Math Issues Committee 11/12/04

meeting convened at 10:50 a.m.

Minutes from the October 1, 2004 meeting were approved.
Question regarding placement of course in Math Common Numbering
matrix—
Pat questioned whether the placement of
Housatonic
’s MAT* 127 was correct in the Common Numbering matrix, as this
statistics course now has a MAT* 137 prerequisite. According to the
common numbering scheme, courses with a prerequisite of Intermediate
Algebra should carry a number above MAT* H138; Mark will ask Catherine
Cron at
Housatonic
to contact Pat regarding this issue.
Announcement regarding AMATYC’s Crossroads—
Joe recommended that anyone who has not yet had a chance to review the
draft of the AMATYC Standards 2006 document, please do so. The latest
draft of the document, Beyond
Crossroads Draft Version 6.0, can be downloaded from the AMATYC
website, http://www.amatyc.org.
Since this document will be representing all of us, he recommended that
as individuals we each read the document and comment on it. Those who
will be attending the Annual Conference in
Orlando
next week will bring the document and give feedback in the appropriate
sessions; others are encouraged to provide feedback online.
Revisiting course titles in the Common Numbering Matrix—
Pat suggested revisiting titles of some math courses in the Common
Numbering Matrix, in particular, MAT* 167, Statistics
with Technology. While the course title was chosen to emphasize the
fact that technology (computer and/or graphing calculator) applications
are an integral part of the course, in fact the title has in some
instances been confusing to students, faculty, and admissions personnel,
who think that the course is geared towards engineering and/or
technology students. It was suggested that we find out what the CSU’s
and other universities call their statistics courses; discussion also
took place about the possibility of using a “C” for computer and
“T” for technology (either computer or graphing calculator).
Stats transfer to UConn—
A lengthy discussion ensued regarding discrepancies of Community College
statistics course transfer to the
University
of
Connecticut
, and what to do about this issue. Our goal is to obtain accurate,
consistent articulation. The group finally agreed to enlist the help of
the system’s Chief Academic Officer, Dr. Paul Susen. Additionally,
Committee members agreed upon the contents of letter to be sent to Dr.
Susen. With Pat’s
assistance, Elaine will write the letter and send it to Dr. Susen,
copying all Math Issues Committee members.
Other business items including Tech Prep and Pathways Programs were put
on hold until the December 3 meeting at 10:30 at CCSU, Memorial Hall,
Nutmeg Room.
